Years must past before a definitive biography of Lloyd George can be published, and it was therefore most desirable that Dr. Thomas Jones should set down in this book his interim unofficial contribution, based in part upon sources available to the public but also upon personal knowledge which the author acquired during the years when, as an eminent civil servant, he saw much of Lloyd George at close quarters. It traces the career of a significant political innovator who has been much lauded and also much decried and the subject of violent controversy. 'For his own part in the conduct of the First World War, writes Dr. Jones, 'Lloyd George has written his own defence in his remarkable Memoirs. Some disputed matters are dealt with [in the present book] at perhaps disproportionate length in an attempt to clarify the issues involved. I have tried to rid myself of prejudice and partiality but I am not so foolish as to believe that I have succeeded.' Readers will quickly discover for themselves that Dr. Jones has written an absorbing biographical narrative which will take its certain place among the essential documents concerning one of the shapers of the modern world bot in peace and in war.
