As indicated in the preface, at the beginning of the XX century. reference literature about Crimea was extremely poor. Meanwhile, the interest represented by the region increased every year: the resort value of the Crimean coast and the southern foothills grew, the study of the rich historical past of the region and its archaeological sites grew, and in particular the number of visitors to Crimea, patients and tourists grew. These visitors, sick and healthy, needed detailed practical instructions regarding the device and travel in the Crimea; it was necessary to describe in detail areas curious in one respect or another, lighting their sanitary, household and other sides; description of the remedies of the region, etc.
