Based on a wide range of sources, the functions, structure, personnel, peculiarities of work and competence of the Chancellery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, an institution in the bowels of which the books of the Metric of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and many acts arose, are today one of the priority historical sources. Attention is focused on little researched and controversial problems of the history of the institution.
