The Battle of Gravelot-Saint-Privat was the hardest battle of the entire Franco-Prussian War. Attacked by superior enemy forces, Marshal Bazin's French Rhine Army inflicted great damage on the advancing Prussians, but was forced to retreat to the fortified city of Metz, where it remained until its surrender.
