The book of the French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir "The Second Sex" was published in 1949, first in France, and a little later in almost all Western countries. The success of the book was overwhelming. In the United States alone, booksellers immediately sold a million copies of it, and the demand remained unsatisfied. Despite many reprints, the book did not stale on store shelves. Several generations of women grew up on her, honoring her for the new Bible. She brought her author worldwide fame, making the name of Simone de Beauvoir no less famous than the name of her husband Jean-Paul Sartre, who was known for many years as the master of intellectual Europe.
