This work is the archaeological part of the Turkestan Album, containing detailed visual materials on the Islamic architecture of Samarkand as it appeared shortly after the conquest of the region by the Russian Empire in the 60s of the XIX century. In the second half of the 19th century, the Russian Empire expanded its possessions at the expense of Central Asia, annexing the territories that are currently part of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
