First published in 1968, Mikael Balint's Basic Defect: Therapeutic Aspects of Regression served as the basis for a large-scale reform of psychoanalytic theory and technology. Balint's book is extremely important for understanding such central problems of psychoanalytic theory as the nature of the Self, the consequences of developmental disorders, the value of empathy.
