Ali Pasa was the last of the Ottoman grandees who spent most of his life in the service of the sultan and served in the highest posts of the Ottoman government. As one of the most competent statesmen of the 19th century, he was able to understand the political affairs of his time more than his contemporaries. Shortly before his death, he presented a political testament to the sultan in which he gave a full account of his deeds as the grand vezir, difficulties and dangers the empire faced, as well as a future course of action to save the empire from its doom. His progressive ideas were condemned to obscurity until they resurfaced in 1910 in France, where his work was translated into French and published. This book presents an English translation of Ali Pasa's political testament with an introduction on the political events of his time.
