The book tells about the sailor-scientist A.I. Butakov, who laid the foundation for the exploration of the Aral Sea and in the middle of the XIX century for the first time compiled his hydrographic map, used until the 50s of the XX century. The scientific materials he collected were highly appreciated by domestic and foreign geographers, becoming the starting point for modern researchers of the Aral Sea.
