Wine of the Boar is the follow on from the Soldiers of The Boar trilogy and is the final adventure of ex centurion Velio Pinneius.The action takes place sixteen years after the events described in Centurion of The Boar (where Velio, Gallus and Hanno retire from the Twentieth legion and take over a vineyard in Gaul. Hanno is later murdered.)In Wine of The Boar, our hero Velio Pinneius now has a family and life seems secure.However he has a notion to travel to the Germania frontier, where the emperor Marcus Aurelius is busy fighting back the barbarian tribes which are growing increasingly aggressive and invading the empire.Velio decides to sell their wine to the emperor in order to boost their own prestige and that of their vineyard. Velio believes this will be simple, Gallus is not so sure. Leaving Gallus and his family behind to manage the estate, Velio sets off with his eldest son Drusus, Orann their faithful servant, and other characters from Centurion of the Boar.Leading their mule train is a local horse dealer Antoninus and his brother. They hope to sell horses alongside Velio's wine.Things start to go awry as they cross over the frontier and run into a lost cavalry patrol from the Twenty Second legion and the reality of the war becomes very real.Meanwhile back at the wine estate in Argentomagus, Gallus nurses a long held promise to avenge Hanno. When one of their freed slaves returns unexpectedly with news that he knows who murdered Hanno, events in Argentomagus begin to heat up too.Will Velio, Drusus and the rest make it safely home from the wilds of Germania with a wine contract from Marcus Aurelius?
