The book for the first time comprehensively examines the travels of Russians in the 18th century: academic expeditions, trips to study at European universities, sailing of Russian officers by volunteers on British ships to the shores of America and India, Grand Tour, etc. The involvement of eight unpublished travel diaries made it possible to reconstruct in detail the daily life of travelers and better understand the psychology of a Russian person of the 18th century. The appendix contains notes of 1762-1765. midshipman N. Poluboyarinov and diaries of participants in a grandiose trip to Russia and Europe in 1782-1788, organized by Catherine the Great for her son A.G. Bobrinsky.
