The history of the country testifies to the fact that art has always been a moral and political factor in Russia. Under Soviet rule, as in the years of autocracy, art and its creators often played a very important role in cultural politics. At the same time, one part of the artistic intelligentsia sincerely or for other reasons served the authorities, while the other, sometimes sacrificing personal well-being, freedom, or even life, challenged it.
