Gastric sleeve surgery is a form of weight loss surgery that falls under the larger umbrella of bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery covers a wide range of weight-loss surgeries that are performed on individuals who are overweight. For example, to reduce one’s weight with bariatric surgery, the size of the stomach is drastically reduced with a gastric band, or a part of the stomach is removed entirely, and the small intestine can be rerouted. Bariatric surgery, in general, is used because it is enormously successful in treating weight loss for the long term and helps those same people recover well from diabetes and improve cardiovascular health.
