Margrave is a tiny perfect town. So perfect it's frightening. Former military policeman Jack Reacher, who leads a nomadic lifestyle, comes to Margrave, intending to leave the city in a couple of days. However, at this point, the first murder in thirty years takes place in Margrave. He is hanged on Reacher, the only stranger in town.
