This publication sums up many years of searching about Mark Chagall in order to collect all the known material (printed, archival, illustrative) related to the Russian years of the artist's life and his ties with Russia. The book not only summarizes a large amount of previous research and publications, but also introduces into scientific circulation a significant body of new documents that make it possible to clarify important facts and circumstances of the Shagalov biography. These are, for example, information about the artist's pedigree and family, a set of documents about his activities as Commissioner for Arts in revolutionary Vitebsk, diplomatic correspondence about his visit to Moscow and Leningrad in 1973, and to a particular extent his extensive correspondence with Russian-speaking correspondents. The book also includes for the first time a list of exhibitions with the participation of Chagall held in Russia and Belarus, and the most complete bibliography of publications about Chagall in Russian from the 1910s to the present day, including the painting of articles published in scientific (small-circulation, and therefore inaccessible) collections. This monumental publication, reliable both in historical and textual terms, will certainly attract the interested attention of both researchers and a wide readership, which is dear to the name of Marc Chagall, and which is interested in domestic and world culture.
