The Cauchy problem is studied for general linear systems of partial differential equations in classes of analytic functions. Systems are described for which the Cauchy problem is correct in classes of functions of exponential type. The need for Kovalevskaya conditions has been clarified and a connection has been established between the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theory and the exponential theory.
