The Bennets - what were they thinking?What were the Bennets thinking while they mouthed polite nothings over refreshments? In Lydia's case, probably very little. In Elizabeth's case probably far too much. The story line is true to the Jane Austen classic. The Bennet girls and Mrs Bennet are faced with an uncertain future when Mr Bennet dies, as his estate is fixed on a male relative who will not take care of them. They will literally have nothing and be homeless. Lydia will have to live on her wits! That will not end well! Probably due to Mr Bennet's super power: not worrying too much until it happens, the girls are not over alarmed. Inevitable penury and its stark implications seem to be ignored in favour of choices of bonnets and gowns as they make dubious decisions about the suitors they meet. This much shorter book gives you the thoughts of the characters. We understand why Darcy is solemn and brooding and what motivates the appalling and attractive George Wickham. We can hear them think....
