The Song of Hiawatha is considered Longfellow's most remarkable work. It appeared in 1855. The impression made by her was extraordinary: in six months she withstood thirty editions, gave rise to a lot of articles and imitations and was translated into many European languages. Everyone was struck, first of all, by the originality of its plot and the novelty of a brilliant, strictly sustained form. "My famous friend," says the famous German poet F. Freiligrat in the preface to his translation of "Songs of Hiawatha," "opened America to Americans in poetry. He was the first to create a purely American poem, and it should take an outstanding place in the Pantheon of World Literature." The translation of the poem, made by I. Bunin at the end of the 19th century, is considered an unsurpassed masterpiece of Russian translation art.
