During the Crimean War (1853-1856) in Sevastopol, Nikolai Vasilievich Berg first served in the 4th Treasury Department, managing the awards, and then was a translator at the headquarters of the commander in chief. He participated in the battle on the Black River, lived on bastions during the siege. In 1858, his "Notes on the Siege of Sevastopol" and "Sevastopol Album" were published, which are 37 drawings with a detailed description of each in Russian and French.
