The great French poet, writer and playwright Jean de Lafontaine (1621-1695) became famous primarily as the author of the famous "Fables." However, his creative heritage is significantly more diverse. In a short story, "The Love of Psyche and Cupid" (1669), Lafontaine creatively reworked Apuleius's famous tale of Cupid and Psyche from his novel The Golden Donkey. The traditional plot is modernized by Lafontaine in the spirit and style of literature of French classicism of the 17th century. Fairy-tale fiction is surrounded by the playful irony of the author, whose cheerful humanism continues the traditions of the French Renaissance and largely precedes the free-thinking of Voltaire and the "enlighteners" of the 18th century.
