According to the author, each of us has borderline ways of responding, but someone has them deeply hidden, and for someone life as such is stressful, and therefore these ways turn into a "borderline organization of personality." Psychiatrists and psychoanalysts place "border guards" between neurotics (conditionally mentally healthy people) and psychotics (mentally unhealthy). The author's task is to understand the qualitative features of the structure of the psyche of such people.
