The first Russian translation of the novel by the classic of French and world literature Victor Hugo (1802-1885), made by a regular employee of the Vremya magazine Yulia Petrovna Pomerantseva (? -1873). The phrases and poems she left in French and Latin are from Ernest Karlovich Watson's translation (1839-1891), and some of the commentary is from Evgenia Ivanovna Conradi's translation (1838-1898). The text is printed according to the first publication in the journal of the brothers M. M. and F. M. Dostoevsky "Time" (1862). The book is decorated with the works of book illustration masters, many of which are published for the first time after more than a century of hiatus.
