Gustave Flaubert's famous novel Madame Bovary is deservedly considered one of the masterpieces of world literature, although after the first publication of the novel in 1856, its author was charged with insulting morality and was brought to trial. These charges were later dropped, and "Madame Bovary" took its rightful place among 19th-century literary classics. In this edition, the text of the novel is translated by A. N. Chebotarevskaya and illustrated by drawings by Alfred de Rishmon, which are as accurate in detail as the text of the great French prose writer himself.
