Decoupage (from French decouper - cut) - decorative technique, the origins of which date back to the early Middle Ages. It reached its greatest popularity in the 17th century in Venice, when furniture decorated with inlays in the Chinese or Japanese style was in fashion. By varnishing, Venetian furniture makers imitated expensive oriental inlays, which was significantly cheaper.
