The monograph presents the hypothesis of the origin and function of consciousness, developed by the author on the basis of research in cognitive psychology and phenomenology. Consciousness stands out as a distinct phenomenon with functions distinct from those of other psychic phenomena. The argument of the hypothesis put forward is presented and a definition of consciousness based on it is given, which makes it possible to formulate the development of the Turing test for detecting consciousness in artificial agents.
