This book is a historical study about the time of Patriarch Nikon, one of the prominent church leaders in Russia of the 17th century. Its author, based on a wide range of sources, considers not only the biography of the patriarch, but also political history, relations between the state and the church, international politics, and the culture of the transition period. The six years of the patriarchate of Nikon (1652-1658) were eventful, none of which happened without the personal participation of the lord. Using the support of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, Nikon concentrated enormous power in his hands. However, the crisis of the old Moscow worldview caused by the cultural conflict of the 17th century led to a weakening of the role of the church and the deposition of the patriarch. In modern times, religious ideas lost their former significance, giving way to the rationalism of the Enlightenment.
