The waters of the northern seas were accessible to German submarines, numerous Arctic islands were an ideal place for repair bases and tracking stations, and the northern sea routes were of strategic importance to Germany. In addition, according to some reports, Hitler's plans included the construction of the so-called Uranium Project facilities in the European north.
