The following methods for studying the quality of metals and alloys are described: optical metallography; fractography; temperature metallography. Systematized information is given for various metals and alloys, their welded and soldered joints on methods of making thin sections (of various shapes and sizes), on methods of identifying the structure (tables of reagents and etching modes by chemical, electrochemical and other methods are given), characteristic microstructures of basic structural materials are shown.
