Many naturalists began their acquaintance with nature by collecting insects, especially butterflies. Indeed, of all living things, insects represent perhaps the most publicly available material for research, the material, moreover, is extremely interesting and diverse. Collecting leads to familiarization with taxonomy, and acquaintance with larvae and pupae leads many to a more versatile study of insects, to familiarization not only with forms, but also with their lives.
