Having shocked the USSR in the late fifties, largely thanks to the efforts of Sergei Smirnov, the history of the defense of the Brest Fortress became an inseparable link in the Soviet epic about the war. However, in addition to exalting the defenders, who surprised the enemy with their courage, the epic also dictated certain canons in considering those events, subordinating any story about them to propaganda purposes as much as possible. Schematics and lopsidedness over time have formed several stable stamps that interfere with the objective consideration of the battle for Brest. The study of the Brest events had another feature - the almost complete absence of a documentary base. The battle for the Brest Fortress was known mainly from the stories of the defenders collected, as a rule, 10-15 years later, after the events described - a source, undoubtedly valuable, but also having a number of shortcomings - primarily the possibility of inaccuracies and errors. Although it should be noted that sometimes the memory of veterans who remembered small details is simply amazing.
