The central event of the novel is the famous Battle of Grunwald (1410), in which the combined forces of Poles, Belarusians, Lithuanians and Ukrainians defeated the troops of the Teutonic Order. The novel presents a gallery of historical figures - Grand Duke Vytautas, King Jogaila, Grand Master Ulrik von Jungingen, Prince Shvidrigaila, Vytautas's wife Princess Anna, etc.
