Platon Ivanovich Baranov - director of the Senate archive, writer-historian, began his service in the office of the VIII Department of the Senate and from 1865 until the end of his life was the director of the Senate archive, which brought him to a much better state than he was under his predecessors. In 1872, Baranov undertook with the Highest permission the publication of an inventory of the Highest Orders stored in the Senate archive since the establishment of the Senate, under the title "Archive of the Governing Senate." In total, three volumes of the Archive were published from 1872 to 1878.
