Diary of the Scotsman Patrick Gordon (1633-1699), who became the Russian general and mentor of Peter the Great, is a unique source on the history of Europe and Russia in the second half of the 17th century. This publication completes the first complete scientific publication of this monument. The sixth of the surviving volumes of Gordon's notes is devoted to the last military campaigns of the 17th century, in which the author played a leading role as a commander: Azov in 1696, culminating in the capture of this important fortress, and Azov-Tavansky in 1697, as well as a description of the Streltsy riot of 1698, suppressed largely thanks to General Gordon. The volume contains a lot of valuable information on the military, political and socio-economic history of Russia and neighboring countries, as well as a number of official and personal documents of that era. The text of the source is supplemented by letters from the author, mostly published for the first time, evidence for 1699, not reflected in the Diary, comments, pointers and illustrations.
