The four-volume "History of Russian Ethnography" is the first monograph on this topic at the time of writing. There are generally few books on the history of Russian ethnography, only the textbook by S. A. Tokarev, published in 1966, is widely known. Pypin's "History of Russian Ethnography" has long been inaccessible to readers and, in addition, is practically unknown to the younger generation of ethnographers, since there are few references to it in modern literature.
