Umberto Eco's book is addressed to everyone who is interested in translation problems and, first of all, of course, to translators. Eco does not seek to build a general theory of translation, but summarizes its richest experience in an accessible and entertaining form in order to give quite serious recommendations to everyone who recreates "almost the same" in their native language. The essence of the translation process, according to Eco, is in the "negotiations" conducted by the translator with the author in order to reduce losses: they have every chance of being successful if the source text was reinterpreted "with passionate complicity."
