"There is nothing more naive and worse than in our time to hide something from the people," wrote Mikhail Prishvin, a Russian writer, prose writer and publicist during the First World War. "Now everyone, even the darkest peasant, understands that it is not the army that is to blame, but the interior that supplies the army." There could not be any other way in the "situation of real slave lack of freedom," Prishvin said and showed in his notes what happened in Russia the day before and during the war years. The defeat was the natural result of all this - "so we need," he wrote - but then a revolution took place, accompanied by violence, blood, need and hunger.
