The second half of the 16th century is an important stage in the history of the Russian state. A sharp turn from boyar rule to reforms and the subsequent oprichnina are the most important milestones in the political development of that time. Having chosen a biographical genre, the author analyzes the nodal problems of Russian history of the 16th century, comprehensively characterizes the contradictory personality of Ivan the Terrible.
