Valentin Mikhailovich Berezhkov was born in 1916 in Leningrad. In 1940 he took part in the negotiations of the Soviet government delegation in Berlin. In December of that year he was appointed first secretary of the USSR Embassy in Germany. At the beginning of World War II, he returned to his homeland and worked in the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the rank of adviser. In November 1943, V. M. Berezhkov went to Tehran, where he took part in the Tehran conference of the heads of the three allied powers as a translator. In August 1944, V. M. Berezhkov was sent to the United States for a conference in Dumbarton Oaks, where the contours of a future international organization were developed and the wording of the draft UN Charter was agreed upon. After the end of the war, V. M. Berezhkov switched to journalistic work in the Novoye Vremya weekly, covering a number of international meetings as a correspondent. Currently, V. M. Berezhkov is the editor-in-chief of the journal "USA: Economics, Politics, Ideology." This book is based on the author's memoirs related to the pre-war diplomatic actions of the Soviet government, as well as with the negotiations of the countries participating in the anti-Hitler coalition.
