The death of the Napoleonic army in the vastness of Russia in 1812 was a tragic milestone in the history of Europe. Almost all peoples living from Gibraltar to the Urals were involved in the war of four empires and a dozen other states, the outcome of which was predetermined by the burning of Moscow, the ancient capital of Russian Orthodoxy.
