The Chan Buddhist School (better known by our Japanese name Zen) is one of the leading areas of Far Eastern Buddhism, which has had a huge impact on the spiritual life, culture and art of China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The Chan school (or contemplation school) proclaimed the principle of instant enlightenment: "Look into your own nature and you will become a Buddha." It is characterized by the rejection of complex philosophical constructions in the name of the immediate discretion of reality (as it is) and our own nature (which is the nature of the Buddha). The great teacher Xing-yun, currently living in Taiwan, is an outstanding modern carrier of Chan spirituality and the successor of the patriarchs of the Chan tradition Lin-ji (Rinzai).
