The What to Read for Children Index aims to help teachers, librarians, pioneer leaders and parents choose books for children and properly organize reading for elementary school students. The list contains about six hundred books and is a revised and significantly expanded edition of the index issued by the Children's Book House in 1951. The index is based on a list for extracurricular reading recommended by the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR in school curricula.
