Russian rulers throughout the 16th-17th centuries chose wives through a complex ritual known as bride viewing. The most beautiful girls of Muscovy, who belonged to the layer of the provincial nobility, were delivered to Moscow, where the tsar's confidants - courtiers and boyars - assessed their physical health, spiritual qualities, appearance and virtues. Applicants who passed the preliminary selection then appeared before the king, who made the final choice.
