One of the most interesting figures in German politics at the beginning of the 20th century is, without a doubt, Theobald von Bethmann-Holweg. "True as money," said Kaiser Wilhelm II. As Reich Chancellor under Wilhelm II, Bethmann-Holweg held liberal views and pursued the so-called "diagonal policy," skillfully balancing between conservatives and social democrats. He was an energetic and pedantic official, but at the same time a creative nature. The purpose of his policy was to politically educate the people and achieve compromises between the ruling parties. The first part of the memoirs was published in May 1919. In it, Betman-Holweg describes the events that preceded the First World War, discusses the role of England, France and Germany itself at the beginning of the war. Bethmann-Holweg died on the first day of 1921 before completing the second volume of his memoirs.
