The work of Hugo Grotius "Three books on the law of war and peace" was published in March 1625, at the height of the Thirty Years War. The translation is based on the Latin text of the 1646 edition, which is the first after the death of the author and includes his latest instructions. In addition to over 50 editions in the original language, Grotius's work had many editions in Dutch (the first in 1626), English (the first in 1654), French (1687), German (1707), Italian (1777), Spanish (1925), Chinese (1937), however, not always complete.
