Representing Russia in the 1990s by Sodom is unfair. Our brothers were no worse than the American gangsters of the "roaring" 1920s, and the post-Soviet serial killers were no worse than the Soviet ones. Chechnya is the lesser of evils when compared to Colombia's civil war. Wide layers were hard to learn that it is normal to be wealthy, and Russia has never been a country of such equal opportunities. A significant part of Russians turned out to be quite proactive and did well without widespread state interference in their affairs. No one was tormented by the question: "If not Yeltsin, then who?" Western institutions took root well in a country exhausted by Marxism-Leninism, and it needed a special path like a hedgehog T-shirt. Why then everything changed?
