The novel "Black Woman" (1834) is the main work of the writer, publicist, journalist and philologist Nikolai Ivanovich Grech (1787-1867), one of the outstanding phenomena of the Pushkin era. Grandiose in design, the novel covers three decades of Russian life at the turn of two great centuries and, following "Eugene Onegin," deserves to be called the "encyclopedia of Russian life."
