A rare edition of three alchemical texts, including the first illustrated appearance of The Twelve Keys by Vasily Valentin and the first printed editions of Thomas Norton's Ordinal of Alchemy and Testament by John Kremer, collected by the outstanding Rosicrucian apologist Mayer. The first work shows the close dependence of alchemy and hermeticism of the 17th century. Reprinted in 1625, Ordinal also appeared as the first text in Alchemy Elias Ashmole's monumental collection of English, Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum (1652). Norton deserves a mention for being influenced by Chaucer; the Ordinal itself is written in extremely incorrect heroic verses, often shortened to octoslogs. The third text of the Golden Three is John Kremer's "Testament," the source of several legends about Ramon Lull.
