Emperor Alexander I (1777-1825), who reigned in Russia since 1801, is one of the most mysterious figures in Russian history. Probably, so many contradictory judgments were expressed about none of the sovereigns by compatriots and foreigners, contemporaries and current researchers - for all he remained unsolved Sphinx. The famous writer Henri Troyat, the creator of the famous series of biographies of Russian autocrats from Ivan the Terrible to Nicholas II, in his book, published in 1980 in France by the Flammarion publishing house, is trying to unravel the secret of this Sphinx.
