This guide includes descriptions of popular pilgrimage routes to Nizhny Novgorod, Diveevo, Arzamas, Makaryevo, Vladimir, Murom, Sergiev Posad, Svirskoye and Solovki. Currently, the pilgrimage of believers to holy places is beginning to revive in Russia. An important role in this is played by existing monasteries and churches, organizing such events. Pilgrimage services have appeared, specializing in organizing pilgrimage trips around the world. Some travel companies are also actively involved in this process. Despite the seeming external similarity of the pilgrimage with excursion tourism, their internal essence is very different: while excursion tourism aims to visit interesting places, the pilgrimage involves preliminary spiritual work, "cleansing the soul," before visiting the shrine. However, pilgrimage is often replaced by excursion tourism, when people are simply guided through "excursion objects," without preliminary internal, spiritual, preparation. Therefore, back in the spring of 2003, the Interreligious Council of Russia submitted a proposal to the State Duma of the Russian Federation on the delimitation of the concepts of "pilgrimage" and "tourism" at the legal level.
