In the history of the Civil War in Russia (1917-1922), the figure of the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the South of Russia, General A.I. Denikin (1872-1947), is extremely contradictory. The red winners hated the general as the most successful white commander, who caused them a lot of trouble, but gave him credit for principle and consistency, the desire to preserve a united country, contrary to the actions of the allies. The white losers considered him not a charismatic enough figure against the background of the legendary personalities of the White Cause, who failed to achieve his goal due to strategic mistakes. At the same time, they noted his ability to defend his positions both at the front and in the most difficult negotiations with the interventionists. General Denikin lived in exile for many decades, but carried his patriotic views through all these years and through World War II, without tarnishing himself with cooperation with the Nazis.
